Wearing clear aligners honestly couldn’t be simpler. They’re easier to manage than traditional braces, because they basically aren’t braces at all. However, like with most things, they can sometimes take a teeny tiny bit of getting used to.
There may be days when you start thinking “this is strange, but…”, however, rest assured that most of the weird and wonderful things you’ll go through on your journey to a straighter smile are totally normal. We’re always here to help, so let’s take a look at some of them!
A Little Discomfort
Most people don’t experience any pain, but there is often a bit of discomfort when you put new aligners in. This is totally normal, and actually to be expected. Why? Because it shows that your clear aligners are doing their job. Don’t forget, to get a straighter smile, you need to move your teeth. While they move into their new positions, it might feel a bit awkward.
This usually goes away within a few days as your teeth begin to settle in. However, there are some easy things you can do to make the discomfort go away:
- Start new sets of aligners at night. You’ll quite literally sleep any discomfort off!
- Rinse your mouth with warm, salty water to soothe.
- Suck on something ice cold. This will help reduce any swelling. Icy pole, anyone?
- Good, old-fashioned pain relief. You won’t need anything too strong.
An Odd Fit
When you put a new set of aligners in, it can be easy to convince yourself they don’t fit. There is a simple explanation! Each set is just a little bit different than the one before. That’s because each set moves your teeth slightly closer to perfection than the last.
We’ve got you. All orders from smilogy include chewies which we send out as standard. Chewies are literally little things that you chew on you help seat your aligners onto your teeth and keep them in place.
A Little Lisp
This one’s pretty cute. Some people who wear clear aligners find they have a bit of a lisp at first. It doesn’t happen to everyone, and it usually goes away as you adjust.
Most people probably won’t notice that you’re speaking a little differently at all, it’s just that your mouth may feel a little full!
A Change to Your Bite
Your top and bottom teeth will start to fit together a little differently as you’re changing your smile. It’s a process, so it may feel a little weird at first, but your bite should be totally normal by the end of treatment.
Any concerns in the meantime? You can use the online to show our Australian orthodontists and dentists. That way they can help let you know that everything’s working as it should.
A Wobbly Tooth Or Two
Yeah, there’s no need to panic whatsoever. Your teeth aren’t going to fall out, they may just feel a little loose while they move around and do their thing.
Moving around is literally the point of the entire thing, and will lead to a straighter smile in the long run.
A Bit of a Dry Mouth
There’s never a bad reason to drink more water! Having clear aligners in your mouth 20/7 can lead to a bit of dry mouth, but that’s easily fixed. Better still, you can fix it for free. Simply head to the tap.
If that’s not doing the trick, speak to your pharmacist. They should be able to sort you out with a special mouthwash for dry mouth - just don’t use it with the aligners in.
