Receding gums aren’t the most fun things you can have, but they happen. At smilogy, we know they’re not something you might research usually, but we’ve put together a guide about why they happen, and how you can get professional help.
Causes of Gum Recession
When the position of your gum tissue is lowered, you experience gingival recession, which is just a fancy term for gum recession. The root of the tooth is then exposed, which can be unpleasant.
So, how does this happen? Here are a few common reasons:
- Going over the top with brushing or flossing. If you’re scrubbing, you’re doing something wrong. We usually recommend a “soft” brush to avoid issues like this, but be sure to check for personalised recommendations at your next smilogy appointment.
- Not brushing or flossing enough - yep, there’s a sweet spot! If your oral hygiene isn’t on point, receding gums can be a consequence.
- Your genes. You can thank your mum or dad for that one! If you were born with thin gums to begin with, and one or both of your parents have gum recession, chances are you will too.
- Grinding your teeth. This is because the movement associated with this can cause the gums to recede. Luckily, “bruxism” treatment can be an easy fix - just ask your smilogy dentist.
- Tooth positioning can change everything. If they’re prominent in the arch and not well covered with bone, you may experience receding gums.
- If you’ve had a traumatic injury (ouch), this can cause trauma to your gum tissue. In turn, this can cause the gums to recede.
Treating The Issue
Treatment depends on the causes of your receding gums and how bad the issue has become for you. At smilogy, our Australian dentists will help you figure all of this out and give you guidance about how to improve your dental habits at home.
Most required treatment is easy peasy, but in some cases, surgery can help. Don’t worry about that though unless you’re told it’s needed - and even then, it’s a common procedure.
