Flossing Isn't Optional: Here's Why!

Flossing makes a world of difference to your overall health.

Dental floss lives in so many bathrooms and yet we find that many people avoid it at all costs. It’s hard to pinpoint why - some don’t like the added process, some hate the feeling, and some simply forget about its existence.

If that sounds like you, smilogy is here to help you change your habits and make your life easier. Here’s why when it comes to flossing, you can’t just take it or leave it.

Here’s Why It’s Essential

Flossing makes a world of difference to your overall health. Yep, it doesn’t just affect the wellness of your smile - it can actually be holistic.

Known to protect against gum disease caused by gum inflammation (gingivitis) as well as cavities, flossing should be part of your daily dental toolkit. In addition to brushing your teeth and using mouthwash, it helps you form a defence against decay and disease.

Thanks to its ability to get in between teeth, it can remove bacteria from those hard-to-reach areas of your smile. As a result, it doesn’t build up and destroy enamel, become plaque or harden to tartar. Be warned - even when it doesn’t progress, tartar causes bad breath!

If you were to get gum disease or other dental issues, it could actually lead to issues in the rest of your body. It can increase your chances of getting heart disease, diabetes, dementia or having a stroke.

Learn How To Do It

In order for flossing to be effective, you’ll need to do it once a day. Simply take a piece of floss, wrap around your index and middle fingers and place it in between two teeth before moving it around. The idea is to remove trapped food and any plaque.

If that’s tough, don’t be dismayed. There are heaps of options available to you. You can clean the teeth with floss sticks, interdental brushes or even devices like water flossers.

Don’t forget that brushing twice daily is also an essential part of the process.
