We all have a million and one things to do every single day. Sometimes, picking up a new tube of toothpaste is the last thing on our list, even when we know it’s super important.
After a quick rummage through some drawers, it can be tempting to use an old, crusty tube you find as a last resort. Here’s why that’s probably not the best idea!
Here’s What Happens To Old Toothpaste
Toothpaste contains fluoride, which isn’t treated too nicely by time. If you’ve left your toothpaste past its expiry date, the fluoride in it can break down and become unstable, unable to bond with other ingredients and protect your teeth from cavities.
It’s not just fluoride which ages pretty poorly. This is why you may notice that if you do use an old tube, it may have a funny taste. As the binding agents themselves start to break down, ingredients may separate.
Time isn’t your only enemy. Toothpaste doesn’t stay fresh for as long if it’s not looked after properly. Always replace the cap after every brush and store it somewhere cool. Warm temperatures can also cause the ingredients to stop binding.
Toothpaste Doesn’t Last Forever
The typical expiry date for most toothpaste is 18-24 months. That’s because this is roughly the amount of time it’ll take for the fluoride to stop doing its thing as mentioned above.
You can protect your smile for longer by choosing the right toothpaste to begin with. It’s a good call to pick one with the Australian Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Approval. These products have been through the most rigorous testing to meet the very highest standards and their availability of fluoride right at the very end of their life expectancy.

If I Use Expired Toothpaste, Will I Be Okay?
Don’t worry - you won’t get sick.
However, it’s really not worth your time at all. You see, when the active ingredients aren’t doing their jobs properly, you’re just not getting the benefit.
Book In For A Check-Up
In addition to your twice-daily, 2-minute teeth brushing and daily floss, the best way to keep on top of protecting your smile is to book in for regular appointments every 6-12 months.
