Not content with being a “pain in the neck”, ulcers are some of the cruelest things life can throw at us. We’re exaggerating, obviously, but try telling yourself that when you are caught up in the grips of their annoyance!
If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, they’re usually white, painful sores with red around the edges, and they can be found inside your mouth.
Why Do We Get Ulcers?
Some people are lucky enough to never get ulcers, but for the rest of us, the reasons we suffer are really varied.
Sometimes, it’s because of trauma due to ill-fitting dentures or braces. Other times, it’s because of stress, or because you’ve eaten acidic or super-hot foods.
The Symptoms
When you have an ulcer, you tend to know it. Ulcers are found all over the mouth, including on your tongue, your gums, the inner part of your lips or on the roof of your mouth.
You’ll probably experience pain and discomfort, as well as tenderness. Don’t worry - none of this is contagious! You’ll just need a week or two (max) for proper healing.
Help In The Home
If you’re going through pain, you need to ice it! Simply wrap an ice cube into a paper towel and hold it over the affected area (but never place the ice near the skin).
Yes, this is only a temporary relief, but it still makes you feel better.
