Did You Know? There Are 3 Types Of Teeth Staining

Discover the three types of tooth discolouration: extrinsic, intrinsic, and age-related.

Is there anything more frustrating than stains on your teeth? Well, yes, but we know it’s super annoying.

The good news is that most teeth staining can be easily taken care of. Teeth whitening is so easy these days - you can read more here about your options and book a free scan with smilogy.

Discover the three types of tooth discolouration: extrinsic, intrinsic, and age-related.

Extrinsic

Everyone’s teeth are protected by something called enamel. It’s a thin covering of the tooth, but don’t be fooled - enamel is the toughest tissue in the human body (yep, even more than bone). Its job is to protect the more fragile parts of the teeth from tooth decay.

When you have extrinsic tooth discolouration, it’s usually because the stains are affecting the enamel on a surface level. Certain food and drink like coffee and red wine tends to be the culprit, with tobacco causing issues as well.

Intrinsic

When stains form on the inside of your tooth, they’re called intrinsic. Unlike most extrinsic stains, intrinsic stains tend to look a bit grey.

The causes for this kind of discolouration tend to be a little more varied and can be caused by the following:

  • Tetracycline antibiotics if you’re pregnant or under the age of 8
  • Trauma or tooth injury
  • Tooth decay
  • Too much fluoride in childhood

Sometimes extrinsic stains can become intrinsic ones when they get absorbed all the way into the enamel. This darkens them.

Age

As we get older, the enamel on our teeth starts to wear away. This often means that our teeth unfortunately start to look more yellow.

Age-related discolouration can be caused by both extrinsic and intrinsic factors, and depends entirely on you. So, that’s something to look forward to.

Here’s How We Can Help

At smilogy, we take a unique approach to teeth whitening. After you come in for your initial quick and easy 3D scan, our Australian dentists will review them to check what kind of stains you have and whether they’re going to be treatable.

Intrinsic staining can be somewhat more difficult to treat, because there may be other issues at play. For example, if your tooth is decayed, we’ll need to fix that probably first. Don’t worry, we can usually find a way around it!

Assuming you’re a great candidate for teeth whitening, the 3D scans take perfect impressions of the contours of your mouth so that the custom whitening trays fit perfectly. That means you’ll have a more evenly whitened smile
