While we love seeing friendly faces (and big smiles) here at smilogy for our range of whitening treatments, we recognise that prevention is better than the cure.
To prolong your time between whitening treatments - or even to avoid needing them at all - there are plenty of things you can do to be proactive in achieving a whiter smile.
Keep Your Teeth Clean
Good oral hygiene is so important for a number of reasons. Not only is it so important for your overall health, it’s also a great way of avoiding some of the major issues that can cause teeth discolouration, such as stains and decay.
Take care of your teeth by:
- Brushing your teeth at least twice a day
- Using toothpaste and mouthwash with fluoride
- Flossing every day
- Eating healthily
- Changing your toothbrush every 3-4 months
- Seeing your dentist (yep, us!) every 6-12 months
Be Wary of Stains
We know how tempting it is to have a coffee in the mornings or perhaps a nice glass of red wine after work. However, many darker foods and drinks can leave long-lasting impressions, and not in a good way.
We recommend that if you’re serious about teeth whitening, you should try and give up (or at least cut back on) certain things. This includes:
- Smoking
- Chewing tobacco
- Coffee
- Tea
- Red wine
- Dark berries
- Beetroot
Some antibiotics can cause teeth to stain as well. Try talking with your doctor or pharmacist about whether there are alternative options.
Sparkling Smile Switches
Sad about the thought of changing your habits? You can still enjoy a lot of delicious foods and drinks to keep your teeth white and lovely.
Why not switch up red wine for white? If you really don’t want to, reduce the chance of staining by brushing around an hour before drinking. That way you’ll have less plaque on your teeth for the red wine to stick to. Don’t rush to brush soon after, however. The acidity of the wine can actually do some damage to your enamel. Try rinsing your mouth with sparkling water instead.
Good news - it’s safe to eat a range of delicious foods to help with your teeth.
- Calcium-rich foods can strengthen your teeth (cheese, please!)
- Seeds and nuts help get rid of plaque
- Strawberries and citrus fruits can tackle minor stains
- Apples, celery and carrots cause you to make more saliva.
